PLANTS FROM THE EAST MOJAVE

We are both drawn to the power of plants as symbols of nourishment and medicine, as well as appreciating their sculptural qualities. Our first project, The Purification Project, utilized the Native American practice of burning sage as a spiritual cleansing agent, and most of our projects since have contained plant-based elements.

Plants from the Mojave was a wall sculpture made as part of the installation Explorations with the Iron Camera, exhibited in Las Vegas in 2005. We wanted to bring the desert tapestry into the gallery, with its array of colors, textures and scents.

Also, we were struck by the fact that many residents of Las Vegas never go past the city limits into the desert beyond. As a result, some people believe the desert to be a place of utter desolation, devoid of color and beauty, when in fact the landscape of many sites nearby contains a rich pallete of color.

All plants in this piece were gathered at our ranch near Searchlight, Nevada, in the high desert of the East Mojave.
